My First Bra

Our cringeworthy, touching and undeniably relatable first bra stories.

The Excitable One

"I absolutely could not wait to start puberty and wear bra just like my older sisters. When I started to develop boobs, I went straight down to Marks and Spencer like I was off on the trip of a lifetime ready to wear a bra and feel like a woman. I was elated. I can't exactly remember when I got my first bra, but I remember being one of the first out of my friends and being really proud of this fact. My mum was very specific about where I got my bras from and what type of bra I could wear. I wasn't allowed to wear bras which had underwire in them for what felt like years (I was so desperate to wear one and feel like a 'sophisticated woman') as my mum would say I needed to let my breast develop properly first. Also, despite wanting to wear lacy frilly bras, my underwear draw was full of plain ones as my mum insisted I was too young to wear fancy ones - it really felt like she was set out to ruin my life back then. However, now I truly am a 'sophisticated woman' and get free reign of lingerie stores to buy whatever I like (so HA, mum)."

The Big-Boobed One

'Wearing a bra when I was younger was the absolute bane of my life. Whilst all my friends were happy-as-larry with their non-existent boobs, mine wouldn't stop growing and I absolutely hated them. I remember wearing a bra to school once and seeing the boys whispering to each other about it - I was mortified. However, the older I got the more I began to embrace my body and the more I loved the attention I got from the boys because of it (cringeworthy I know, don't judge me). Now, I judge my body not on how other people see it but on how I feel within myself and I absolutely love it and lingerie shopping has become an addiction rather than a chore that I'd have to be dragged out the house, red faced, by my mum to do.'

The Early Bloomer

"I started puberty at an early age; my boobs were growing from age 9. My mother used to say it was just my body gaining weight. It wasn’t until I started secondary school that I got professionally measured. My first bra was purchased in Marks & Spencer and was a delicate floral pattern. I hated having boobs because they stopped me enjoying sports, so I am grateful that there are companies who produce sports bras for women with a larger bust. Now that I am older, I'm learning to embrace my boobs and have realised breasts come in all different shapes and sizes."

The non-existent one

"I remember back in primary school when me and all my friends got our first ‘bras’. When I say bras, I mean a thin pieces of t-shirt material which had the sole purpose of covering us up when getting changed for P.E in front of the boys. As we grew up bra’s became an essential and we loved it. Getting the bus to town to check out the latest neon undies in La Senza turned into almost a weekly ritual. The only problem was, I had nothing to put in a bra unlike them. Fast forward ten years and that’s pretty much still the case, but now I’ve learned to embrace it. Pretty lace bralettes are practically my best friends and I never have to worry about wearing something with an uncomfortable under wire.

It’s important to realise that every single body is different and there isn’t any such thing as a ‘normal’ body. I love my small boobs because they’re mine. They make me who I am, just like everyone else’s body makes them who they are."
